How I Read
When I was five, I first learned to read.
I hated it.
My grandma would sit me down at the table, and forced me to read. I learned the alphabet and how to read before I even attended school, and I did not enjoy it. I did not learn to enjoy reading until I switched schools in fourth grade. The school I attended was Benjamin Foxen Elementary School, in Sisquoc Ca, and it was literally in the country. I had a teacher named Mrs. Adams, and she taught me to love reading. She split my class into four groups, and assigned each group a book. My group was assigned Bridge to Terabithia by Katherine Patterson.
It changed my life.
I suddenly couldn't get enough of books.
I joined my schools' book club, and devoured anything put in front of me. Later that year, I took a test that told me what reading grade level I was at. A week later, I was called into the principals' office. I thought I was in trouble. The principal told me that I, as a fourth grader, had a reading level of an eight grader. He then told me that he wanted to take me and three junior high students to an Author-Go-Round. We got to meet a bunch of cool authors, and learn all about how they write.
From there, I just kept getting better. As a sixth grader, I had a reading level of a twelfth grader.
Whenever I got into trouble, instead of taking my phone or electronics, my mom would take my books.I was addicted to reading.
Sadly, when I started high school, I had to stop reading. I never had time to read anything new, so when I did have time, I just reread one of the books on my shelf. It was sad. I have read two new books in the past two years, and I really miss the adventure and the rush that comes from reading books.
